Acting Question: College and an acting career

HI BARBARA,

THANK YOU FOR WRITING TO ME AND FOR TRUSTING THAT I MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP YOU OUT.

SEE MY COMMENTS AMIDST YOUR LETTER ALL WRITTEN IN CAPITALS.

Hi Tony!

I have a question for you, I hope you can help me with this because i’m really desperate and confused.

I’m 19. I graduated from High School in 2011 and currently i’m not attending any schools. I really want to start an acting career, it’s been my passion since I can remember! But right now, i’m pretty discouraged because i’m not sure about going to college.

There’s one place i’d like to apply for, but auditions are held only in the fall, and if I get accepted, I would start my freshman year in the fall of 2015! But if I don’t get accepted I would have to wait another year to audition and then another year to start!!! That means I would be starting college at 21 or 22… I was wondering if that’s too late to start college…

WHAT COMES TO MIND HERE IS NOT TO PUT ALL YOUR EGGS IN ONE BASKET. JUST LIKE WHEN YOU CONTACT TALENT AGENTS AND CASTING DIRECTORS, IF YOU HOPE TO GET RESPONSES, YOU NEED TO CONTACT SEVERAL. IN THE ACTING INDUSTRY FOR EXAMPLE (AND THIS FIGURE I’M ABOUT TO GIVE YOU IS VERY MUCH UNIVERSAL), YOU CAN EXPECT TO HEAR BACK FROM 5% OF THE PEOPLE YOU CONTACT. NOW WHILE THE RESPONSE RATE WHEN APPLYING TO UNIVERSITIES MIGHT NOT BE SO LOW, THE CONCEPT IS THE SAME. IN THE ACTING FIELD, THAT’S WHY MANY PEOPLE DON’T GET RESPONSES. THEY CONTACT ONE OR TWO AGENTS THEN SIT BACK AND WAIT. TO GET TWO AGENTS, I CONTACTED 45. TO BUILD A RELATIONSHIP WITH THREE CASTING DIRECTORS WHO CALLED ME IN REGULARLY FOR AUDITIONS, I CONTACTED 52.

SO WHERE AM I GOING WITH THIS? AS MUCH AS YOU MIGHT WANT TO GO THAT SPECIFIC SCHOOL, THERE MUST BE OTHERS THAT ARE GOOD AND THAT WILL FULFILL YOUR NEEDS. SEEK THEM OUT AND APPLY. MAYBE ONE WILL ACCEPT YOU AND YOU CAN AT LEAST START YOUR COLLEGE CAREER AND THEN MAYBE TRANSFER LATER TO THE OTHER SCHOOL THAT YOU SO MUCH WANT TO ATTEND.

AND NO. 21 OR 22 YEARS OLD IS NOT TOO LATE TO START COLLEGE. I STARTED AT 24 AND FINISHED MY MASTER’S AT 30! FOR ME, IF YOU WERE MY DAUGHTER, I WOULD SAY TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF THESE EARLY YEARS. DON’T JUST DO NOTHING (NOT SAYING THAT YOU ARE). ALWAYS DO SOMETHING THAT WILL HELP YOU TO LEARN. GET A JOB THAT WILL HELP YOU TO LEARN SOMETHING YOU WILL NEED AND NOT JUST ONE TO MAKE MONEY.

Here’s the other thing. Right now, my family don’t have much money, so I need to get a job in order to pay for my classes, but if I get a full-time job, that leaves me absolutely no time to attend acting and singing classes.

THIS IS ONE OF THE NUMBER ONE PROBLEMS THAT ACTORS FACE. HERE AGAIN, GET A JOB THAT WILL HELP YOU LEARN. I DON’T KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE, BUT FOR EXAMPLE IF YOU LIVE IN NEW YORK OR LA OR IN ANY CITY WHERE THERE ARE TALENT AGENCIES AND CASTING OFFICES, YOU COULD TRY AND GET A JOB IN ONE OF THOSE OFFICES. THAT WAY YOU CAN WORK, LEARN AND MAKE SOME MONEY TO TAKE CLASSES. ANOTHER THING YOU COULD DO IS TRY AND SEE IF YOU CAN DO A WORK STUDY PROGRAM AT THE ACTING SCHOOL OF YOUR CHOICE. MY ACTING TEACHER HAD STUDENTS WORK FOR HER AND IN RETURN THEY TOOK CLASSES. IF YOU CAN STAY AT HOME WITH YOUR PARENTS, GET A PART-TIME JOB IN A CASTING OFFICE AND WORK A FEW HOURS A DAY IN AN ACTING STUDIO AND TAKE CLASSES, THAT WOULD BE PERFECT.

IF NOT, THEN IF YOU REALLY NEED MONEY, THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE YOU COULD CONSIDER, BUT IT WILL TAKE A WHILE TO SET UP BEFORE YOU START MAKING MONEY AND THAT’S TO SET UP A MONEY-MAKING WEBSITE ONLINE. HERE’S MORE ON THAT.

I would really appreciate your advice. Do you think i’m too old to start my acting career?

NO, I DON’T THINK YOU ARE TOO OLD. How can I get acting jobs or get some acting experience? THE ABSOLUTE BEST ADVICE I CAN GIVE YOU IS TO TAKE MY ACTING CAREER QUICK START HOME-STUDY COURSE BARBARA. IT IS SO COMPLETE WITH OVER 40 HOURS OF VIDEO THAT YOU CAN ACCESS ANYTIME YOU WANT. IF YOU CONSIDER THE COST WHICH IS $222 OVER A SIX MONTH PERIOD OR A MERE $149 TO GET THE ENTIRE PROGRAM ALL AT ONCE, IT WILL GIVE YOU A WEALTH OF INFORMATION ABOUT THIS CAREER IN ACTING YOU WOULD LIKE TO PURSUE AND PUT YOU ON THE FAST TRACK TO MAKING SOMETHING HAPPEN.

OTHERWISE IF YOU WANT TO TRY THIS YOU CAN,

BUT THIS IS QUITE DIFFERENT FROM HAVING SOMEONE WALK YOU THROUGH EVERYTHING STEP-BY-STEP AND BE ABLE TO SEE AND TALK TO THAT PERSON EVERY MONTH ON SKYPE AND HAVE THEM ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS WHEN THEY POP UP.

Do you consider it is a MUST DO attending to college?
NO, BUT IF YOU WERE MY DAUGHTER I WOULD TELL YOU TO CONSIDER IT STRONGLY. ACTING IS A TOUGH BUSINESS AND ONLY VERY FEW REALLY MAKE IT. ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS THEY DON’T MAKE IT (AND WHEN I SAY MAKE IT, I MEAN JUST BEING ABLE TO MAKE A FULL-TIME LIVING FROM IT AND NOT BECOMING A STAR) IS BECAUSE THEY DON’T HAVE THE CHARACTER, THE PERSEVERANCE AND DRIVE NECESSARY. ANOTHER MAIN REASON THEY DON’T MAKE IT IS BECAUSE THE VAST MAJORITY DOESN’T TAKE TIME TO LEARN THE BUSINESS OF ACTING. THAT IN SOME WAYS CAN BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN JUST LEARNING HOW TO ACT, WHICH IS IMPORTANT, BUT IF YOU ARE A GOOD ACTOR AND DON’T KNOW HOW TO GET YOURSELF SEEN, THEN WHAT GOOD IS IT TO BE A GOOD ACTOR? RIGHT?

Or maybe is just enough taking some professional classes out of college?

FOR ME, WHAT’S IMPORTANT IS THAT YOU DO SOMETHING NOW. MAKE THE MOST OF THIS TIME AND MAKE YOUR CHOICES TODAY COUNT FOR SOMETHING TOMORROW.
