In part I of how to create actor reels, you’ll see that I talked about getting a friend to do it for you, when you are in what I describe as Situation 1, which is that you have not much money and you have no credits, no acting experience and no video of actual acting work that you have done and are considering asking a friend to create your actor reels for you.
Now we’ll talk about the actor who is in Situation 2.
Creating actor reels Situation 2:
a. You don’t have much money and you want to get an acting reel created.
b. You DO have content, which means that you have acting experience and you have actual footage of real acting jobs that you have done, commercials, plays (shot in good quality and professionally and not with a hand-held camera by someone who was sitting in the audience), film and/or television work.
c. You are thinking about having a friend of yours, who knows how to edit video and put it all together for you.
What should you do?
It really depends on how good your friend is at doing what he does and whether or not he is really qualified and able to create an actor reel for you. Remember that your reel is yet another (aside from your headshot, website, etc.) business card for you. It’s one of the things that casting directors will look at to see if they would like to call you in for auditions. It’s what talent agents might look at to call you in for an interview if they are looking for new talent to represent of your type.
At any rate, make sure you know how actor reels need to be formatted and what casting directors look for and how they will use it. You can have the best quality shots in your reel, but if they are not formatted correctly and/or in the right order and in the right length, they won’t get seen. The result of that is that you might not get called in for, not just one audition, but for all the auditions which you submit for and where the casting director is relying on your reel to decide whether to call you in for a live audition or not.
Think about it.
In the Acting Career Quick Start Video Series, we go into great detail about, not only actor reels, but all of your marketing materials and how to use them correctly to ensure greater probability of creating a successful and continuous chain of events: building relationships with casting directors and agents and other industry professionals, which leads to getting called in for auditions, not just once in a while but frequently and regularly, which leads to booking acting work..regularly.
